Every successful business generates information. The challenge is turning that information into better business decisions. NetRisk Business Insights shares practical advice to help business owners improve profitability, strengthen operations and achieve sustainable growth.

Reading Time: 5 minutes

Category: Cash Flow | Profitability | Working Capital

Who should read this?

Business owners and managers wanting to improve cash flow and strengthen working capital.

Every profitable business should generate cash.

Yet many profitable businesses still experience cash flow problems.

At first glance, that doesn’t seem to make sense.

If the business is making money, surely there should be money in the bank?

Unfortunately, that isn’t always how business works.

One of the biggest misconceptions is believing that sales automatically generate cash.

They don’t.

The more important question is this:

Where is your cash tied up?

For many businesses, cash becomes trapped in slow-moving stock, excessive inventory, overdue customer accounts, shrinking profit margins or unnecessary operating expenses.

These problems rarely appear overnight.

They develop gradually until one day the business owner finds themselves worrying about paying suppliers, funding payroll or relying on an overdraft despite reporting a profit.

Understanding where cash becomes trapped is the first step towards improving cash flow.

Cash Flow Is an Operational Issue

Many people think cash flow is purely a financial problem.

In reality, it is often the result of operational decisions made throughout the business.

Buying too much stock.

Holding inventory for too long.

Allowing debtors to pay late.

Pricing products incorrectly.

Making purchasing decisions without understanding future cash requirements.

None of these decisions seem significant on their own.

Together, they place increasing pressure on working capital.

Questions Worth Asking

Rather than looking only at your bank balance, ask yourself:

Are we carrying more stock than we need?

Which products are tying up our cash without generating sufficient sales?

Are customers paying us within agreed terms?

Are our profit margins being protected?

Do we receive accurate information quickly enough to make informed decisions?

Do we understand where our working capital is going each month?

The answers to these questions often reveal opportunities to improve cash flow long before it becomes a crisis.

Better Information Leads to Better Decisions

Business owners make decisions every day.

The quality of those decisions depends on the quality of the information available.

When operational and financial information is accurate, timely and connected, it becomes much easier to identify where cash is being tied up and what needs attention.

Cash flow improves because better decisions are being made—not because sales have suddenly increased.

How NetRisk Can Help

At NetRisk, we believe every operational challenge has a cause, and every cause has a solution.

Through our Business Improvement Methodology, we work alongside business owners to understand how their business operates, identify the operational factors affecting profitability and cash flow, and recommend practical improvements that support sustainable growth.

Sometimes improving cash flow isn’t about selling more.

It’s about understanding how the business operates and making better business decisions.

Coming Next in Business Insights

Marketing isn’t about selling. It’s about being remembered

Every successful business generates information. The challenge is turning that information into better business decisions. NetRisk Business Insights shares practical advice to help business owners improve profitability, strengthen operations and achieve sustainable growth.

Reading Time: 5 minutes

Category: Marketing | Business Growth | Customer Engagement

Who should read this?

Business owners, managers and entrepreneurs wanting to attract more of the right customers.

So what is marketing?

When most people hear the word marketing, they immediately think about advertising, social media, flyers or promotions.

In reality, marketing is much simpler than that.

Marketing is the creation of awareness.

It is the process of making the right people aware that your business exists, what you do, and why they should choose you over someone else.

Your potential customers already have a need or a problem to solve. Marketing simply helps them discover that you have the solution.

The challenge is that markets never stand still. Customer expectations change. Buying habits evolve. Competitors introduce new products and services.

That is why successful businesses don’t market once and forget about it—they continually evaluate whether they are still speaking to the right audience with the right message.

The Four Questions Every Business Should Ask

Marketing textbooks often refer to the “Four Ps”—Product, Place, Price and Promotion.

While the terminology has changed over the years, these four principles remain just as relevant today because they encourage business owners to think about the fundamentals.

1. Is our product solving the right problem?

Your product is more than the item you sell.

It includes the service you provide, the experience your customers receive and the value they believe they are getting.

Ask yourself:

Why should a customer choose us instead of our competitors?

What makes our offering different?

Are we solving a genuine customer problem?

Businesses that continually improve their products remain relevant. Businesses that stop listening to their customers eventually lose them.

2. Are we easy to do business with?

“Place” is no longer just about where your business is located.

It is about how customers interact with you.

Whether customers visit your premises, phone your office, buy online or deal with one of your sales representatives, every interaction shapes their experience.

If doing business with you is difficult, customers will eventually find someone who makes it easier.

3. Does our pricing reflect value?

Many businesses believe they have to compete by being the cheapest.

In reality, most customers are looking for value, not simply the lowest price.

Your pricing needs to achieve two objectives.

It must provide enough value for your customer to feel confident in buying from you, while generating sufficient profit for your business to remain sustainable.

Pricing is not just a financial decision—it is part of your overall business strategy.

4. Are the right people hearing about us?

Promotion is often confused with advertising.

Advertising is only one way of creating awareness.

The real objective is to ensure that your message reaches the people most likely to buy from you.

That may be through networking, referrals, social media, community involvement, email campaigns, your website or traditional advertising.

The method matters far less than whether it reaches your target market.

Successful businesses don’t try to reach everyone.

They consistently reach the right people.

Building Awareness Builds Trust

Very few customers buy from a business the first time they hear about it.

People buy from businesses they recognise.

They buy from businesses they trust.

Every time someone sees your company name, reads one of your articles, receives excellent service or hears a recommendation from another customer, your brand becomes a little stronger.

Marketing is therefore not simply about generating today’s sales.

It is about building tomorrow’s opportunities.

Questions Worth Asking

Take a few minutes to consider your own business.

Do we clearly understand who our ideal customer is?

Does our product still meet their changing needs?

Are customers finding it easy to engage with us?

Does our pricing reflect the value we provide?

Are our marketing activities creating awareness with the right audience?

If a potential customer heard about us today, would they immediately understand how we could help them?

Sometimes the answers reveal that the challenge isn’t your marketing at all.

It may lie in your pricing strategy, customer experience, sales processes or operational systems.

How NetRisk Can Help

At NetRisk, we believe sustainable business growth begins with understanding how every part of the business works together.

Marketing creates awareness, but lasting success depends on consistently delivering value through effective operations, sound business processes and informed decision-making.

Our Business Improvement Methodology helps business owners identify operational challenges, uncover opportunities for improvement and align their systems and processes to support long-term growth.

Category: Profitability | Financial Management | Business Performance

Who Should Read This?

Business owners, financial managers and entrepreneurs who want to better understand the relationship between sales, costs and profitability.

What You’ll Learn

Why turnover doesn’t always mean profit.

What your break-even point tells you about your business.

Why understanding your costs is essential for sustainable growth.

How better business information supports better decision-making.

Every Business Has a Break-Even Point

Every business reaches a point where its income is enough to cover all of its costs.

This is known as the break-even point.

Below that point, the business is losing money.

Above it, the business begins generating a profit.

It sounds like a simple concept, yet surprisingly few business owners know exactly where that point is.

Understanding your break-even point is one of the most valuable pieces of information you can have because it tells you how much business you need to generate before your business starts rewarding the investment you’ve made.

Sales Don’t Automatically Create Profit

Many business owners measure success by increasing sales.

While growing sales is important, sales alone don’t determine whether a business is profitable.

Every sale carries a cost.

Products need to be purchased or manufactured.

Employees need to be paid.

Premises, vehicles, electricity, insurance and countless other expenses all contribute to the cost of running a business.

Only after all of these costs have been covered does the business begin generating a true profit.

This is why two businesses with similar turnover can produce very different financial results.

Understanding the Difference Between Gross Profit and Net Profit

Gross profit measures how much remains after the direct cost of producing or purchasing your products has been deducted from sales.

Net profit goes one step further.

It reflects what remains after every operating expense has been paid.

A healthy gross profit does not necessarily mean your business is profitable.

Many businesses generate strong sales and healthy gross margins but still struggle because operating expenses gradually consume the profit they thought they were making.

The real measure of success is not simply how much you sell.

It is how much your business retains after every cost has been paid.

Questions Worth Asking

Rather than concentrating only on turnover, consider asking yourself:

Do we know our break-even point?

Have we identified all of the costs involved in running our business?

Have we included the true cost of the owner’s time and remuneration?

Are our pricing decisions generating sufficient profit?

Are increasing expenses eroding our profitability?

Do we receive timely financial information that supports good business decisions?

The answers to these questions often reveal opportunities to improve profitability long before financial pressure becomes obvious.

Better Information Leads to Better Decisions

Successful businesses don’t rely on guesswork.

They rely on accurate, timely information.

An accounting system should do far more than produce financial statements or satisfy statutory reporting requirements.

It should provide business owners with meaningful information that helps them understand profitability, monitor performance and make informed decisions.

One principle is worth remembering:

Your business should not adapt to your accounting system. Your accounting system should adapt to your business.

When your systems provide the right information at the right time, you gain greater confidence in the decisions you make every day.

How NetRisk Can Help

At NetRisk, we believe every business decision should be supported by meaningful information.

Through our Business Improvement Methodology, we help business owners understand the operational and financial drivers that influence profitability. By aligning business processes with fit-for-purpose systems, we help organisations gain greater clarity, improve decision-making and build more sustainable businesses.

Understanding your break-even point is not simply an accounting exercise.

It is one of the foundations of good business management.

Coming Next in Business Insights

Who Should Read This?

Business owners and managers who want to improve the way they manage their business through better information, better systems and better decision-making.

What You’ll Learn

Why choosing the right accounting system is a business decision.

Why one solution doesn’t suit every business.

How the right information improves operational performance.

What to consider before investing in a new business system.

Every Business Depends on Good Information

Every business owner makes decisions every day.

How much stock to buy.

Whether to increase prices.

When to employ another person.

Which customers deserve more attention.

How much cash is available.

The quality of those decisions depends on the quality of the information available.

If the information is inaccurate, delayed or incomplete, good decisions become much more difficult to make.

That is why choosing the right business system is about far more than producing financial statements.

It is about helping you run your business more effectively.

One Size Does Not Fit Every Business

No two businesses operate in exactly the same way.

A retailer depends on accurate stock information.

A wholesaler needs visibility across purchasing, inventory and distribution.

A manufacturer requires meaningful costing and production information.

A professional services business has entirely different priorities.

Yet many businesses attempt to use systems that were never designed to support the way they actually operate.

One of the most valuable principles to remember is this:

Your accounting system should support your business—not your business adapting to your accounting system.

When the system fits the business, it becomes a management tool rather than simply an accounting tool.

Software Doesn’t Improve a Business

Software on its own solves very little.

The real value comes from the decisions business owners make using the information their systems provide.

The right system should help you answer important business questions.

Are your products profitable?

Is your stock turning quickly enough?

Are customers paying on time?

Are operating costs increasing?

Where is cash becoming tied up?

When reliable information is readily available, business owners can identify problems earlier, respond more confidently and make better decisions.

Questions Worth Asking

If you’re evaluating your current business system, consider these questions:

Does our system reflect the way our business actually operates?

Are we receiving the information we need to make informed decisions?

Does the system improve productivity or create unnecessary work?

Can it grow as our business grows?

Does it provide meaningful operational insights as well as financial information?

Are we using technology to improve the business—or simply to meet compliance requirements?

The answers often reveal opportunities to improve efficiency, profitability and business performance.

Technology Should Support Business Growth

Technology continues to evolve, but its purpose remains the same.

It should simplify processes.

Reduce unnecessary administration.

Improve the quality of information.

Support better decision-making.

Whether your business operates from a single location or across multiple branches, your systems should give you confidence that the information you’re using is accurate, timely and relevant.

Technology should never become another obstacle to running your business.

It should become one of your greatest business assets.

How NetRisk Can Help

At NetRisk, we believe that every business is different.

That is why we begin by understanding how your business operates before recommending a solution.

Through our Business Improvement Methodology, we help business owners identify operational challenges, evaluate existing systems and implement solutions that support the way their business works.

The objective is not simply to install software.

It is to provide business owners with better information, greater clarity and the confidence to make better business decisions.

Because when your systems support your business, your business is better positioned for profitable and sustainable growth.

Category: Business Systems | Accounting | Business Growth

Who Should Read This?

Business owners and managers who are reviewing their current accounting system or planning for future business growth.

What You’ll Learn

Why selecting an accounting system should begin with your business needs.

Why different businesses require different solutions.

What to consider before investing in new software.

How the right system supports better business decisions.

Your Business Will Outgrow Systems Before It Outgrows People

As businesses grow, their needs change.

The accounting system that worked well when the business started may no longer provide the information needed to manage increasing complexity.

More customers.

More products.

More employees.

More transactions.

Greater reporting requirements.

Growth places new demands on a business, and eventually those demands place new expectations on the systems supporting it.

The important question is not whether your business needs new software.

The important question is whether your current system is helping you manage your business effectively.

There Is No “Best” Accounting System

Business owners often ask,

“Which accounting system is the best?”

The better question is,

“Which accounting system is best for my business?”

There is no single solution that suits every organisation.

A retailer managing thousands of stock items has very different requirements from a consulting business.

A wholesaler faces different operational challenges from a manufacturer.

Even businesses of a similar size may require completely different functionality depending on how they operate.

Choosing software should never begin with product features.

It should begin with understanding the business.

Good Systems Do More Than Process Transactions

An accounting system records what has already happened.

A well-implemented business system helps you understand what is happening now and supports better decisions about what happens next.

The right system should help you answer practical questions such as:

Which products generate the greatest profit?

Where is stock being lost or overstocked?

Which customers contribute most to profitability?

How is cash flowing through the business?

Where are operational bottlenecks developing?

Information like this allows business owners to manage proactively instead of reacting after problems have already developed.

Questions Worth Asking

Before selecting or replacing a business system, ask yourself:

Does our current system support the way we operate?

Will it continue to support our business as we grow?

Does it provide the information we need to make confident decisions?

Can our staff use it effectively?

Will it integrate with the other processes that are important to our business?

Are we choosing software because of marketing claims or because it genuinely supports our operational needs?

These questions often lead to better decisions than simply comparing feature lists.

Technology Should Grow With Your Business

Technology should never limit the growth of a business.

It should remove unnecessary administration.

Improve accuracy.

Provide meaningful information.

Support better planning.

And create confidence in the decisions management makes every day.

Whether your business uses a cloud-based accounting package, a fully integrated ERP solution or a specialised industry system, the objective remains exactly the same:

To provide reliable information that helps you operate a more profitable and sustainable business.

How NetRisk Can Help

At NetRisk, we don’t begin by recommending software.

We begin by understanding your business.

Through our Business Improvement Methodology, we work with business owners to understand how their organisation operates, identify the information they need to manage effectively, and recommend solutions that support both current operations and future growth.

Sometimes the right answer is a new system.

Sometimes it is configuring an existing system more effectively.

The objective is never simply to implement software.

It is to ensure that your business has the information it needs to make better business decisions.

Category: Business Growth | Business Systems | Operational Excellence

Who Should Read This?

Business owners and managers who are experiencing growth and want to ensure their systems and processes continue to support the business as it expands.

What You’ll Learn

Why business growth often creates operational complexity.

How disconnected systems affect productivity and decision-making.

Why integration is about improving business performance—not simply adopting new technology.

How a structured approach helps businesses grow with confidence.

Growth Creates New Challenges

Growth is something every business owner hopes for.

More customers.

More products.

More employees.

More sales.

But growth also introduces new challenges.

The systems and processes that worked when the business was smaller often begin to show their limitations.

Information becomes scattered.

Manual processes increase.

Departments start working in isolation.

Simple tasks begin taking longer than they should.

Ironically, the very success a business has worked hard to achieve can make it more difficult to manage.

Complexity Is the Real Challenge

Many businesses assume their biggest challenge is growth itself.

In reality, it is the complexity that accompanies growth.

When sales, purchasing, inventory and financial information are managed across different systems—or worse, different spreadsheets—mistakes become more likely.

The same information is captured more than once.

Reports don’t always agree.

Decision-making slows because management spends more time searching for information than using it.

The issue isn’t a lack of effort.

It’s a lack of connected information.

Integration Is About Better Decisions

An integrated business system does much more than connect software.

It connects people, processes and information.

When information flows consistently throughout the business:

stock levels are more accurate;

customer orders are easier to manage;

purchasing decisions become better informed;

financial reporting becomes more reliable; and

management has greater confidence in the decisions they make.

The objective is not to introduce more technology.

It is to simplify the way the business operates.

Questions Worth Asking

As your business grows, consider these questions:

Are our current systems keeping pace with the business?

Are different departments working from the same information?

How much time is spent correcting errors or duplicating work?

Can management access accurate information when decisions need to be made?

Are our systems helping us become more efficient—or creating additional complexity?

The answers often reveal opportunities to improve both operational performance and profitability.

Technology Should Support the Way You Work

Technology is most valuable when it works quietly in the background.

It should reduce administration.

Improve communication.

Provide reliable information.

Support better customer service.

And give management confidence that the business is operating as expected.

The goal is not simply to automate existing processes.

It is to build a business that is easier to manage as it grows.

How NetRisk Can Help

At NetRisk, we believe that successful system implementation begins long before software is installed.

Through our Business Improvement Methodology, we first seek to understand how your business operates, identify operational challenges and evaluate the information management needs of your organisation.

Only then do we recommend and implement solutions that support your business today while preparing it for tomorrow.

Because sustainable growth isn’t achieved by adding more systems.

It is achieved by creating better alignment between your people, your processes and your technology.

Every successful business generates information. The challenge is turning that information into better business decisions.
Reading Time: 6 minutes

Category: Business Strategy | Compliance | Business Growth

Who Should Read This?

Business owners, directors and managers who want to understand how B-BBEE fits into the long-term strategy and growth of their business.

What You’ll Learn

Why B-BBEE is more than a compliance requirement.

How B-BBEE can influence business opportunities.

Why every business requires a different approach.

What questions to ask before making B-BBEE decisions.

B-BBEE Should Support Your Business Strategy

Ask ten business owners what B-BBEE means and many will answer:

“It’s about compliance.”

While compliance could be part of the conversation, it should never be the starting point.

The more important question is:

What role should B-BBEE play in helping your business achieve its commercial objectives?

For some businesses, B-BBEE creates access to new markets and customers.

For others, it has very little impact on their day-to-day operations.

Understanding that difference is where good business decisions begin.

Every Business Is Different

There is no single B-BBEE strategy that suits every business.

The appropriate approach depends on factors such as:

who your customers are;

which industries you serve;

whether you supply government or the private sector;

your growth ambitions; and

the opportunities you want your business to pursue.

For one business, improving a B-BBEE level may create significant commercial opportunities.

For another, the return on that investment may be far less significant, or even futile.

The objective is not simply to improve a score.

The objective is to make informed business decisions.

Compliance Is Important—But It Isn’t the Destination

Meeting regulatory requirements is important. B-BBEE is actually not a regulatory requirement, and a business can decide whether to comply with it or not. .

Business owners should ask broader questions.

Will this support our growth strategy?

Will it strengthen relationships with key customers?

Will it improve our competitiveness?

Will it create opportunities that justify the investment?

B-BBEE compliance becomes far more valuable when it supports clearly defined business objectives.

Understanding the Different B-BBEE Codes

There are two things to know about B-BBEE.

The first is that there are three main areas within the Codes. The three areas are:

EME – Exempt Micro Enterprise: Normally turnover below R10 million per annum.

QSE – Qualifying Small Enterprise: Normally turnover between R10 million and R50 million per annum.

Generic Enterprise: Normally turnover above R50 million per annum

The second is that there are certain sectors which has slightly different rules and limits. Examples include sectors such as Financial Services, Construction, ICT, Property, Tourism and Transport. It is important to recognise that some industries operate under their own sector codes, reflecting the specific characteristics and transformation priorities of those sectors.

When a business does not fall under a specific sector charter code, it falls under the Generic B-BBEE Codes (not to be confused with a generic enterprise), which apply to most businesses in South Africa.

For a small business qualifying as EME, the following is important:

100% black-owned: Level 1 (135% procurement recognition)

Above 50% black-owned: Level 2 (125% procurement recognition)

50% black owned or below, up to 100% white-owned: Level 4 (100% procurement recognition)

Before making important B-BBEE decisions, business owners should establish which code applies to their business.

Regardless of the applicable code, the underlying business principle remains the same:

B-BBEE should support your business strategy—not replace it.

Questions Worth Asking

Before investing time, money and resources into improving your B-BBEE position, consider asking:

Why is B-BBEE important to our business?

Which customers or markets expect a particular B-BBEE level?

Will improving our B-BBEE position create meaningful commercial opportunities?

Are we investing in initiatives that support both compliance and long-term business growth?

Does our current approach align with our overall business strategy?

These questions often provide greater clarity than simply focusing on scorecards or points.

Better Business Decisions Create Better Business Outcomes

B-BBEE should never be viewed as an isolated compliance activity.

When aligned with the objectives of the business, it can strengthen customer relationships, improve competitiveness and create opportunities for sustainable growth.

Like any important business decision, the emphasis should remain on achieving meaningful outcomes rather than simply completing a compliance process.

How NetRisk Can Help

At NetRisk, we believe that every business should understand the commercial implications of its B-BBEE decisions.

Through our Business Improvement Methodology, we help business owners evaluate how B-BBEE aligns with their broader business objectives, operational priorities and growth strategy.

Our role is not simply to assist with compliance.
